I participated in SingForHope's Piano Artist program in the spring of 2023 going as Andre the Alchemist. I believe the time period between then and now has been my biggest period of growth and understanding as a Creative. During the Summer I worked as a counselor at the Eternal Seeds Summer Session and took a leadership role in teaching youth creative skills from sculpture to mural painting, but more importantly conversation about the world around them and their investment in their community. However, I found that I was who was taught. Not just through the lessons of Eternal Seeds but through the lessons of life. I had struggles with family, I had creative blocks and I had moments of healing. And in such a thin period of time I began to understand why I am able and should create. It is because of my family, my friends, my community and environment that I am able to do the things that I do because they have sheltered and taught and invested in me and my dreams and have asked for nothing in return. But in return I will give everything I have, and I will continue to invest in my community the way it has in me. Through my teachings and research where my peers and I connect the dots of all the worlds struggles, where we think globally and act locally, through my mastery of mediums and my glass jewelry in particular, which I wear to tell the stories of my representation and my vows to my community, through my identity as a resident of New Orleans that has such rich and vibrant culture and spirit that my generation has only begun to harvest. I did extensive readings and research on Nicholas Payton's #BAM or Black American Music Essays on his website (https://nicholaspayton.com/). I learned about this musician's biography and the culture's of New Orleans that I had never experienced to understand. In Payton's Essays such as \"On Art, Community, And The Culture Of Commerce\", \"Black American Music And The Jazz Tradition\", \"On The Real New Orleans Second Line . . .\" which I recommend as a must read. The musician addresses many residential issues of the New Orleans community and Culture. Pinpointing that New Orleans has become the beating heart of America, of which African American and Indigenous cultures have been coined and popularized into a man-made trap of gentrification and capitalism where we no longer own the streets we march on, and the youth don't know what we're marching for. Payton states \"that it's all become one big party\" in response to the modern day Second Line tradition. Nowadays we Second Line for everything in fashion, but its celebration has passed much like the funerals they originally were in celebration of, the original First Line Tradition. In Payton's essays and in my beliefs, I believe the youth is the half of the key, we have the merit to push the city to shore but we need the direction, the mentor. In famous terms, the Tradition must be passed down with Respect, and the Culture must be taught with Sobriety. A native New Orleanian, Brandon attended graduate school at Tulane University, where he received Master’s of Architecture and Master’s of Sustainable Real Estate development degrees. Brandon received his Bachelor’s of Fine Art, with a concentration in painting and drawing, from Louisiana State University. During this time he was also a member of the LSU football team. \nBrandon’s interests in Art, Architecture and Real Estate Development stem primarily from a place of cultural preservation. Much of his work implicitly responds to life in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina. Focusing on preserving the static and dynamic aspects of the built environment through art and design occupied the bulk of Brandon’s research at Tulane University. Brandon is a former Design Futures student leader, which promotes social and professional equity, as well as design thinking in all aspects of life. He is an exhibiting artist and designer. This piece, will incorporate my love for movement, music and color of New Orleans's urban landscape. I have working on a number of series; STEPPERS, Makeshift and Salvation, that I want to borrow different elements from. For this design, I was inspired heavily by my love and strong connection to nature, as well as the parallels that can be seen between human life and nature. More specifically I chose to focus on dreadlocks, and how to me they've always represented a journey of growth. In addition, I chose to incorporate several vines and flowers to show how both dreadlocks and vines (which also coincidently have similar shapes) are symbols of growth. Under the alias of Ken That Artist, Kendrik creates artwork that captures both the beauty and struggle of being human. These dualities can be explored with themes of self-worth, anxiety, depression, toxic masculinity, feminism, the Black experience and promoting mental, emotional, and physical health. These themes can be explored and communicated through poetry written and performed by Kendrik as well. \n\nWhen his is art is not exploring these dualities, he is exploring creativity and joy with bold colors and fun compositions. This allows him to express his love of art without putting pressure on himself and appreciating his art with others with less heavy information. \n\nEach side of his art plays an important role as an artist. Both sides show his love and dedication of his craft and reflect his time and enthusiasm to create despite being a busy college student. This design is inspired by the music and versatile nature of New Orleans and its people. the colors and plants were inspired by the wetlands that make up most of Southern Louisiana. Music is a huge part of New Orleans culture but i also wanted to call focus to our plants and our green thumbs, in both our planters and innovators. \n\nThe plants are growing from these instruments for some fun composition and whimsical wonder. they are also added since I have seen many people in my city take what they have and whatever they have, and use recycle it and many times it can be used to grow their plants. Bronx-born and Miami-raised, Jason is known worldwide for his “Creative Identity” series, primarily portrayed through paintings of the human figure dissolving into color bursts. His style is described as a fusion of abstract expressionism and realism.\n\nJason has designed and executed several mural projects across the United States. His most current work was commissioned by a global nonprofit, the International Foundation of Arts and Culture. This art installation, featuring a playable painted piano, was created to become part of the permanent collection at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. Additionally, his work has been shown in Times Square, Art Basel, and ArtPrize. Jason also exhibits his work across the country at some of the top arts festivals, such as Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach, Three Rivers in Pittsburgh, and Ann Arbor in Michigan. Sani Self-taught artist M. Sani was born in Cameroon, also known as the “hinge of Africa.” He left his country to pursue his dream of sharing his art with the world and settled briefly in Lafayette, Louisiana, before moving to New Orleans. But after Katrina hit, he was forced to close his art gallery and moved to St Louis, Missouri. Five years later, he re-opened the art gallery on the famed Royal Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans as he is not going to give up on his dream. His work has been featured at the Festival National des Arts et de la Culture (FENAC) in Cameroon, where he represented the Adamawa region in Ngaoundéré and Ebolowa. He also has had art placements in the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and other premier festivals. M. Sani is a working artist in an ever-changing art culture.\nHis work has been described as bold, abstract, and primordial. “My inspirations come from my dreams and nature,” M. Sani says. “Each of my paintings tells a history. You just need to observe and listen.” He uses oil, acrylic, mixed-media, and collage techniques. His process includes, dripping, squeezing, and splashing paint. He says he sometimes paints on reclaimed wood from old historic houses. His work combines the culture of Cameroon and New Orleans. He likes to make people think with his work. “Some important themes such as the spiritual influence of religions, tribal ceremonies, and music are present in my work,” M. Sani says.\nWhen M. Sani says he’s working on his musicians, he is referring to his All That Jazz, Let’s Jazz it Up, and Colors of Jazz collections. The collections often feature silhouettes of musicians playing jazz into the early hours of the morning. M. Sani is looking to turn his gallery into an art space and hopes to bring back the “Little Artists Session,” a workshop for kids who want to express themselves creatively. He is also looking into selling his work virtually as NFTs.\nM. Thoughtful yet playful, Pillaert’s creative process focuses on human connection, material exploration, and authenticity. Her public art projects are designed to involve local residents in the painting process, generating a remarkable sense of community and inclusion.\n\nPillaert earned her BFA from Tulane University in 2020. She focuses on public art design and installation and is on the board of an Anagama Wood kiln located in Husser, LA. Pillaert works with public artist Dixie Friend Gay, and is an installer for Mosaika Art and Design Studios. Based upon the locally iconographic palmetto palms and banana trees, this colorful design is a vibrant and recognizable rendition of Gulf South flora. The striking breaks in color and leaves are intended to visually mirror the keys of the piano and the patterns and movement of music. \n\nGrowing up my dad always made sure to keep our family’s banana trees in good order - before every winter he would chop them off, nearly to the base of the tree, so that when the cold front hit, the tree wouldn’t turn brown and mushy in our yard. Miraculously the trees come back every year, taller and more plentiful than ever. Watching them sprout so quickly is a reminder to me of how resilient and powerful our gulf landscape is, and how we as people hold that same strength and potential for growth if we nurture and maintain ourselves in all that we do. Music in our schools and public places is vital for this growth. She would spend her childhood days painting, sculpting and tinkering. Sigrid dedicated her life to the performing arts. She studied ballet for 16 years, theatre for 10 years, but always found true freedom in visual art. No one could tell her she was too tall for painting and drawing the way they had in ballet and theatre. There was finally acceptance and a beautiful community. \nSince 2020 this six foot Swedish fairy has been pursing her passion and for painting and creating full time, drawing inspiration from the beauty and whimsy of the natural world. In the summer of 2021 Sigrid found herself presented with the opportunity to travel to New Orleans. Upon arriving she strongly and quickly realized that this was her new home. A community of musicians, artists, dreamers, outcasts, misfits. It was heaven. Since being in New Orleans her art has evolved! She became an assistant to a great artist who has challenged her to become better herself. She has begun selling her art in the local markets. She even had her first miniature art exhibit recently at the SMOMA! Sigrid is along for the ride and constantly looking for the next opportunity. She can’t wait to create more whimsy and share her imagination with the world. A top the lush green elephant ears of New Orleans sits a jazz band of Anole lizards. My favorite! They represent me and my band here in New Orleans (the ZigZags). \nThey are bright green lizards that scurry around in the heat of the summer. Here we will have a vocalist, bass, trumpet and guitar player. Down below emerges a gator listening to their songs. Each song played by the lizards will represent a different traditional New Orleans song. On the sides are two native cranes that seem to be seen everywhere in town. They listen as well. The back is the endless galaxy and magic moon. All with a backdrop of one of the sunsets I took a picture of when I first moved here. This is a rough sketch. The painting will be very detailed and cohesive. I’m so excited by this opportunity. Sara graduated from the University of Louisiana in 2016 with her degree in Arts Education. From here, she began teaching visual arts at the secondary level. From 2019 to 2020, Sara took part in several group exhibitions and was a member of the Basin Arts Artist Collective in Lafayette, Louisiana. In 2021 she was awarded a fully-funded artist residency in VanCleave, Mississippi. Sara graduated with her Master’s in Fine Arts, with a concentration in painting, at the University of New Orleans in 2023, where she was conferred numerous Graduate Assistantship Awards. She is currently being represented by M Contemporary in New Orleans and working as an Art Educator in the greater New Orleans area. I find inspiration in the ordinary yet profoundly significant moments of our lives. I am captivated by the notion that music has the power to weave seamlessly into the fabric of our daily experiences, enhancing the beauty of familiar places. Through my work, I aim to celebrate these cherished moments - whether it's the harmonious melody echoing in the backyard or the subtle serenade that accompanies a shared meal. Born in 1994, Hayley grew up in St. Charles Parish, where she was in the Talented Art program from Elementary school until graduating from Destrehan High School in 2012. She ultimately graduated with a BFA from LSU in Baton Rouge in 2017. At her time at LSU, she majored in studio art with a concentration in painting and drawing, studied art abroad in Ballyvaughn, Ireland in 2015, participated in painter’s league, and exhibited her paintings in LSU’s Foster gallery and beyond.\nHayley is a supporter of the arts, especially public art, and ARTS New Orleans. She has partnered up with several organizations including New Orleans’s own Downtown Development District, to create two murals on Royal Street for their vacant storefront program in 2021. This year, she is participating in NOLA Artist Incubator’s 2023 Art in the Park cohort and working with the Paul Mailliard business and arts initiative in her home parish, hoping to help them bring more art to Old Luling. She has also participated in Live Painting events in and around New Orleans, most notably, the international ‘Art Battle’. The Louisiana native is a self-proclaimed ‘emerging artist.’ A practiced painter, muralist, self-published poet, business owner with an online art shop, as well as a commissioned-based painter, she is currently focused on creating whimsical, acrylic paintings in her Bayou St. John home studio. This series focuses on everything from shotgun houses and cemeteries to their porches, mausoleums, and religious statues, as well as other elements uniquely NOLA, like Mardi Gras floats, colorful shot gun houses, and native plants. This series enhances and saturates color, especially, the artist’s favorite blues and greens, while sometimes abstracting and melding together different N.O. and Louisiana locations, in an attempt to capture the true spirit and soul of the amazing place(s) we call home. Lush plant life, strong, stately, New Orleans Oaks, some draped in Mardi Gras beads, and colorful Irises will adorn this piano. The scene captures the serene power of nature, harmonizing with swaying grasses and the commanding presence of the resilient oaks, all set against the backdrop of a New Orleans landscape.
