He studied art at the Brooklyn Museum and the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan where he received his BFA in Media Arts and Illustration. His journey through the world of art began at a young age when he first decorated his parent's bedroom set with colored chalk. Spinelli's work has been exhibited from Brooklyn to Berlin, and he recently painted a piano that was shipped to Athens, Greece as part of a Sing for Hope project to bring art to refugee camps. . Spinelli has worked extensively in chronicling a New York and particularly Brooklyn that he feels is slipping quickly into the past. He has been the Visual Arts Instructor for the REACH Program that serves academically gifted yet economically disadvantaged students at Regis High School since 2011. He lives in Marine Park, Brooklyn with his wife Gena, and sons, Christopher and Alexander. My obsession with Coney Island is well documented in my sketchbooks from the mid-1980’s until today. I have always been enchanted and mystified by this surreal landscape in my hometown of Brooklyn. Coney Island holds for me many memories of my childhood when my father would drive his 1960’s Oldsmobile down to Surf Avenue and pick up a bag of Nathan’s fries that we would devour in the backseat. I would gaze out the window of that old car watching this landscape flicker past me. When I returned in the 1980’s, Coney Island was in a more threadbare state, it was dangerous and seemingly falling apart. It was in this disheveled landscape that I brought my sketchbook and my father’s 1950’s Polaroid camera. The imagery of Coney Island has been burned into my memories and colors my dreams. My design this year pays homage to many of the iconic attractions of Coney Island including Luna Park. Art helps us express ourselves freely. Allows us to creatively share our perspectives and has the power to build bridges culturally, racially, and economically. As an artist, I am well aware of its power. I use my work to inspire people from all walks of life. Especially young people who live in urban environments. I want them to appreciate where they come from and to embrace the beauty around them but also aspire to greater things. I use vibrant colors, textures, and WORDS to inspire the viewer of my work. I use words like DREAM, INSPIRE, SHINE, LOVE, LIVE, CREATE, BEAUTY, PEACE, WISDOM throughout my work to affect emotions in the viewer. Growing up in the Bronx, I had no idea that I could actually be an artist as a profession. It was never an option in my mind. But when I was 14, my mother showed me a documentary called “I’ll Make Me A World” based on the art of the Harlem Renaissance. It was life-changing. I had never seen artists that looked like me. It made it seem real. It planted the seed in me. Now I hear this same thing all the time when I work with students of all ages. It never feels like a possibility to them but when they see me, it becomes attainable. That is always so satisfying to me. Art has absolutely changed my life. Never in a million years, did I think I would have the opportunity to travel and share my work with people from across the globe. I lead workshops with local artists and the experience was so transformative. I was beyond thrilled to paint this piano and to continue working with Sing for Hope. I’m always honored to be involved with the work you all are doing. Also honored and appreciate the opportunity to work with Westfield on this amazing project. To have my work in two of their amazing spaces is beyond humbling. I’m open to any ideas to help inspire young people in NY and LA. Appreciate the opportunity and support that you all provide for artists. I’m all in. This Sing for Hope Piano will be delivered to a public school, healthcare facility, or community center to inspire lives for years to come.","created_at":"2026-05-12T15:24:04.928902+00:00","updated_at":"2026-05-12T15:24:58.325779+00:00"},{"id":"badeb38c-e4a0-47b4-9191-fb3a99a56c3d","legacy_id":110,"piano_url":"evolve-3","piano_title":"Evolve","piano_year":2022,"piano_image":"https://app.singforhope.org/storage/v1/object/public/uploads/pianos/bwac.png","artist_name":"Lance Johnson","piano_program":"e16b0b8f-56d4-463c-b336-8ff74eeac74f","piano_site":"413deab1-6445-4f6d-960a-69b9119289e5","perm_lat":40.7127753,"perm_lng":-74.0059728,"piano_search":"Evolve 2022 Lance Johnson Art has the power to change the world. The Sing for Hope Pianos
Sing for Hope Pianos is a global arts program that creates
artist-designed pianos, places them in public spaces for everyone to
enjoy, then transports and activates them year-round in schools,
hospitals, and community centers worldwide. Sing for Hope has provided
more pianos for under-resourced public schools than any other
organization in the world.
